Rocky DEM

Rocky refers to 3D discrete element modeling (DEM) software which can simulate the motion and effect of a large number of small particles, their interactions with each other and boundary surfaces. Rocky DEM includes non-spherical particle simulation, boundary wear and breakage modeling. Rocky DEM utilises multi-GPU solving technologies to reduce computational effort required for large simulations.

Rocky DEM Key features:

  • Multi-GPU solver capabilities
  • Non-spherical, polyhedral particle shapes
  • Tessellated particle models (breakable and flexible)
  • Thermal, air and fluid flow modelling
  • Complete Multiphysics integration with ANSYS®
  • Combined boundary movements and free body motions
  • 3D surface wear modification
  • Sticky and dry contact rheologies
  • Wide particle size distributions
  • Easy CAD geometry import and simulation setup
  • Python scripting and macro generation
  • Advanced, integrated post-processing features

Rocky DEM and ANSYS® Coupling

Rocky DEM supports complete Multiphysics integration with the ANSYS® Workbench environment, allowing engineers to transfer results seamlessly between ANSYS® Mechanical/CFD and Rocky. Applications include:

  • Dust suppression systems
  • Pneumatic conveying
  • Granular drying
  • Granular sorting
  • Slurry mills
  • Fluidised beds

In addition, Rocky's GPU and Multi-GPU processing combined with ANSYS® Mechanical/CFD’s CPU parallelisation capabilities, ensures that there is no resource competition between the two tools. With this new approach, large and complex multiphase problems can now be solved effectively.

How industries benefit from Rocky DEM

Mining and manufacturing:

Rocky DEM provides a revolutionary way of optimising material handling equipment and metallurgical processes. It enables engineers to:

  • Optimize and compare design modifications. Examples include:
    • Transfer Chutes
    • Feeders
    • Mills
    • Crushers
    • Vibrating screens
  • Replicate problematic operating conditions and investigate possible modifications. Examples include:
    • Coherent flow structures

  • I would like to hereby express my vote of confidence in Qfinsoft, in their ability to service and provide a strong support to us as a company.  We have been a customer of Qfinsoft for over a year and I am pleased to compliment them on their impeccable service offered to us thus far

    - Nico Gunther, Powertech Transformers

  • Since the introduction of ANSYS, more students are using first principles and FEA to validate their designs. This year, more than 60% of the projects were using FEA as a standard approach for numerical calculation. This number shows the huge impact ANSYS, had on University of Pretoria. FEA is not anymore a specialised tool for few users but a standard engineering tool easily integrated in the design process.

    - Francesco Pietra, University of Pretoria

  • For their consulting, training and technical support, Qfinsoft (Pty) Ltd must be the first choice of any firm looking for CAE experts

    - Prof G Akdogan, Process Engineering, University of Stellenbosch

  • At Aerospace, we have successfully used the ANSYS suite of tools to design high-performance gas turbine engines. Throughout this program, Qfinsoft provided valuable support and assistance to accelerate the development of our models. Their accessibility, short-turn around times and willingness to go beyond what is expected make them an effective partner on our projects.
